Mattresses, sofas and other bulky items we collect
One item or a few, we collect them together:
- Mattresses
- Sofas, including corner sofas and sofa beds
- Armchairs and other upholstered seating
- Beds and bed frames
- Wardrobes, cabinets and tables
- Mixed loads with bags and household rubbish
Why an old sofa or mattress needs the right collection
A sofa or mattress is too big for your bin and awkward to get into a car. It’s also easy to get rid of the wrong way. If someone takes it away and fly-tips it, you can be fined, so check they are a licensed waste carrier first. Our licence is CBDU317594 and you can look it up on the Environment Agency’s public register of waste carriers.
Sofas and armchairs need extra care. Upholstered seating can contain persistent organic pollutants (POPs), so it has to be disposed of separately from general waste. Just show it in your photos and we’ll deal with it.
Getting ready for collection
You don’t need to move anything. A few details make the quote more accurate:
- Send a photo of each item. Show the whole sofa or mattress so we can see its size.
- Tell us where it is. Mention the floor, whether there is a lift, and any stairs.
- Tell us where the van can stop. Parking and carry distance affect loading time.
- Worried it won’t fit through the door? Tell us when you send photos and we’ll tell you what we can do.
A council collection or a private one?
A council bulky waste collection may suit you if
- you only have a few items
- you can move them outside yourself
- you are happy to wait for the next available date
A private collection usually suits you if
- the item is upstairs or hard to move
- you want it gone quickly
- you have other rubbish to clear at the same time
Many councils run a bulky waste collection, but the rules, charges and waiting times vary, so check your council’s website. Or send us photos and we’ll give you a price to compare.
